About

Rock 101 (CFMI-FM) is a commercial radio station based in Vancouver, British Columbia, and owned by Corus Entertainment. It serves the Metro Vancouver area with a classic rock format. The station broadcasts in English and focuses on a demographic of adults aged 25–54.

"Willy in the Morning" is the station's flagship show, hosted by Willy, Kim, and Alece. They include talk segments and listener games like the "Grand IQ Test." Other presenters such as Kiah Tucker, Robin LaRose, and Gruff host throughout the rest of the day.

The playlist features 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s rock. Core artists include AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and The Police. The station follows a rigid playlist rotation.

According to Numeris PPM data, Rock 101 maintains a consistent audience share of 7% to 9% among listeners aged 12 and older in the Vancouver market. It operates as the traditional classic rock alternative to 99.3 The Fox, which focuses on "Active Rock."

The format relies on repetition to keep the audience. This strategy provides a predictable listening experience but often lacks variety. While this consistency keeps the core audience satisfied, it does not leave much room for new music or deep catalog cuts.

Personal Experience

I spent a few hours listening to the station during the workday. The music selection is extremely repetitive, even by classic rock standards. If you listen for more than an hour, you will likely hear the same songs again. The morning show banter feels rehearsed, with humor that hits a very specific, narrow tone. The audio is clear and the signal is strong, but the actual content is purely functional. It works for background noise in an office or a car, but it feels like it is running on autopilot.
