About
98.1 CHFI (CHFI-FM) has been broadcasting in Toronto since 1957. With its transmitter up on the CN Tower, the signal blankets the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), though anyone can tune in online from around the world. According to Numeris ratings* for the summer of 2026, the station remains number one in Toronto. And once it switches to Christmas hits, it'll be clear that winter is just around the corner.
The Music
The playlist relies on a predictable mix of familiar throwbacks and whatever is big on the charts right now. For the most part, you will hear:
- 90s & 2000s Pop: Tracks from artists like Ace of Base, Tal Bachman, Roxette, and Jann Arden.
- Current Charts: Heavy hitters like The Weeknd and Beyoncé.
- The Holiday Shift: Every winter, the station flips entirely to 24/7 Christmas music. For a lot of people in Toronto, this switch is the official sign that winter has arrived.
Behind the Mic: Three Hours Straight with CHFI
I left CHFI on for three hours straight while working to see why it consistently stays at the top of the ratings. Honestly, it is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, it works perfectly as background noise for an office or a drive down the DVP; the tracks are selected so safely that the music never breaks your concentration. Over the course of the afternoon, I got a nice hit of nostalgia from Roxette and a couple of tracks from The Weeknd. On the other hand, if you actually focus on the radio, it gets repetitive quickly. The playlist loops through the same ultra-safe, field-tested hits without any real surprises. There is a fair amount of commercials and station sweeps to sit through, but the hosts sound genuinely down-to-earth rather than forced and overly energetic, which makes it tolerable. It is a solid, easy-listening choice for work, but don't expect to discover anything groundbreaking here.
