About

880 CHED (CHED-AM, 800 kHz) has been on the air since 1954 and has long since shifted away from music in favor of a talk format—now it's almost entirely news and sports. I turned it on out of curiosity, literally "for five minutes," but ended up hooked for a couple of hours.

Stacey Brotzel hosts the morning—no unnecessary pretentiousness: news, discussions, and a little bit of everyday life. It's precisely this simplicity that makes it work. Later, Shaye Ganam takes over, and the conversation becomes more intense: more opinions, phone calls, sometimes a little chaotic, but lively.

The station really shines on hockey nights. It's been carrying the Oilers since the '90s, and it's felt in every detail—from expert commentary to the pregame shows. Listening to a game here is almost like an extension of the stadium, only with headphones. They also have full coverage of every Canadian Football League game of the season. For Elks fans, this is the only way to get such in-depth analysis and live coverage from the field.

CHED doesn't try to be perfect. Sometimes the broadcast is uneven, sometimes the conversation drags on—but that's just the nature of the station.
