About
880 CHED has been a staple in Edmonton since 1954. Over the years, the station dropped music entirely to focus on what it does best: hard news and live sports. Owned by Corus Entertainment, it cuts straight to the local updates Edmontonians actually care about.
The recent move from 630 AM to the 880 AM frequency changed its coverage area. While the signal footprint is different now, it still holds up well during daytime drives around the city and the suburbs.
The Talk Lineup
The daytime schedule fits right into the city's daily grind. Stacey Brotzel takes the morning slot (6 a.m. to 9 a.m.) on This Morning. She mixes breaking news with local stories in a calm, straightforward way that works perfectly for a messy morning commute.
Right after, Shaye Ganam takes over with a much faster, opinionated format. His show hits two markets at once, broadcasting on both 880 CHED and Calgary’s 770 AM. It turns into a massive, province-wide town square. It gets chaotic, people call in to argue, and it feels genuinely unscripted.
Oilers and Elks Game Nights
Live sports is where 880 CHED really wins. They have been the official voice of the Edmonton Oilers since 1995. The broadcast team delivers massive pre-game build-ups and deep post-game breakdowns. The station also carries full, live Edmonton Elks coverage throughout the CFL season.
The commentators don't just call the plays; they read the game like pros. It is loud, emotional, and definitely not over-polished. If you want the real mood of the city after a tough loss or a massive win, you find it here.
Tip: Missed the live broadcast? You can catch the post-game audio and analysis about an hour after the whistle blows. Check out the Oilers NOW / Overtime Podcasts or the Edmonton Elks Radio Network.
I ended up keeping 880 CHED on for nearly four hours during a rainy afternoon, long after the morning news ended. Talk radio usually gets repetitive fast, but the shift from local news to the raw energy of Alberta-wide call-ins kept me hooked. By the time the sports guys started trading trade rumors, it felt less like a broadcast and more like just sitting in an Edmonton sports bar listening to the regulars.
